161st Anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore held in China

Sino-Bangla Desk: Consulate General of India, Guangzhou organized an event to commemorate the 161st Birth Anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore on 13 May 2022. The event was organized at the Consulate premises in cooperation with Indian diaspora organizations.

The event began with the offering of a floral tribute to Rabindranath Tagore. In his address, Consul General Shri Shambhu Hakki highlighted the life and achievements of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore, and also gave a musical tribute to Tagore by singing his most popular song ‘Ekla Chalo Re’.

On this occasion, the Consul General of Bangladesh in Kunming, AFM Aminul Islam gave a virtual address highlighting the legacy of Rabindranath Tagore, and also mentioned Tagore’s contribution to the arts and literature of Bangladesh.

Drawing attention to the popularity of Rabindranath Tagore in China, Prof Yu Longyu, a scholar from Shenzen University, talked about the influence and relevance of Tagore in China. The students from Yunnan Minzhu University paid a virtual tribute to Tagore by reciting his poems and singing his song ‘Phule Phule Dhole Dhole’ to commemorate the event.

Among the several cultural performances, a local artist Di Yonghang played the famous song ‘Ekla Chalo Re’ on Erhu along with Tabla and Tanpura’s accompaniments, thus creating a beautiful fusion of musical tribute to Tagore.

During the occasion, Indian diaspora members put together a bouquet of cultural performances such as a rendition of Rabindra Sangeet (songs) in Chinese, Bengali, English & Hindi; Rabindra Nritya (dances), and poem recitations.
